Well, July is on the horizon at last, and the summer folk are pulling into Chester as we speak. The weather still insists upon keeping us guessing, but what the hey...crack open a nice bottle of chilled rosé and let the games begin!!

This Week in Chester 


This Thursday, June 28th Amicus Gallery launches their summer show season with their first opening featuring new works by Poppy Balser, a Chester favorite!! This show is works "Around and About Chester" and runs from June 28th to July 11th. The opening event is from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and they always have great wine and nibbles, so check it out!!

This week the White Gate Restaurant is increasing their opening hours by adding Thursdays back on, so their current hours are: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays open for dinner from 5:50 - 8:30 pm and Sundays from 5:00 to 8:00pm. Chester Farmers' & Artisan Market is open every Friday at the Chester Train Station, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (rain or shine).  Market days are fun days!  They have a variety of local farm vendors and artisan vendors selling fresh fish, meat, breads, veggies, baked goods, jewelry, soaps, folk art, flowers, sweet treats, hot food and more.

Lordly House Museum circa 1806, at 133 Central Street, will be open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Tuesdays to Saturdays.  Newly opened this year is The Train Station Craft Shop & Displays, located at the afore mentioned Chester Train Station. Its hours are from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and on Sundays from 12:00 to 4:00 pm and closed on Wednesdays. They will be holding some great craft demonstrations from 1:00 - 3:00pm on Tuesday afternoons, and this coming Tuesday, July 3rd it will be Rug Hooking. Most demonstrations are free!!

The Rope Loft has a fantastic roster of live entertainment on Friday nights throughout the summer, and this Friday, June 29th Kevin Koloff is playing hits from the 60's and 70's. The live music starts at 8:00 pm and the kitchen will stay open until 9:30 pm on music nights, so get on down to the Rope Loft on Water Street and get your groove on!!



                                                                                  

This Sunday is CANADA DAY...get out your flags, banners and sparklers!! Stock up on briquettes and BBQ lighter fluid!!
The Chester Bandstand Summer Concert series is presenting "Kevin of the Gypsy Minstrels 60's & 70'" on Canada Day starting at 7:00pm. This makes this weekend a 'Kevin Koloff Double Header'!!! Children are welcome to dance on the grass. Adults may want to bring a lawn chair. Concerts may be moved or cancelled in heavy rain at the discretion of the performer(s). Stick around after the bandstand concert for the Chester Harbour Parade of Lights!!! Experience the sail past flotilla of local boats festooned with lights. The Parade of Lights Sail Past is along the Chester Harbour Waterfront & the Chester Yacht Club and will commence at 8:30 pm. Meanwhile the Chester Yacht Club is holding their Canada Day Celebrations with a whole host of activities from Scavenger Hunts to Steaks on the Deck BBQ, so CYC members make sure you check out their events calendar!!





Tuesday, July 3rd sees the kick off of this year's  'Picnic (and dancing) in the Park'!! This is a great series of free concerts every Tuesday through the summer sponsored by a variety of local merchants. Your family is invited, bring your picnic basket and dancing shoes and enjoy the live music from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Lordly Park in Chester. Check out their Facebook page: Picnic in the Park


The Chester Playhouse is set to launch its fantastic summer line up this week, and "Urinetown, the Musical" ("The best show in town with the worst title') opens the Summer Festival Season on July 4th. This saucy politically incorrect musical took Broadway by storm when it premiered in 2001. It ran until 2004 garnering ten Tony nominations and winning three.  Produced here by the Chester Drama Society, and directed by Order of Canada theatre professional, Mary Vingoe, the show features a huge cast of performers of all ages (10 to 70+) predominantly from the Chester area.
Urinetown, the Musical runs from July 4th to 7th at 7:30 pm with a matinée added on Saturday at 2 pm.

The Chester Art Centre is again this year running fantastic Art Camps for Kids. The first series starts on July 16th, and you will need to register soon to make sure you get a place. A friend of mine recently asked me if I knew how a man could tell if man's best friend was his wife or his dog.....I thought the answer was rather obvious but he explained that if you locked both your wife and your dog in the garage for 2 hours, only one of them was going to be pleased to see you!!
